Further foldable containers were installed for use as commentary booths, media and editing suites, offices and other admin centres. The team also installed 2 temporary kitchen structures, both with vinyl flooring, in collaboration with West Country Marquees. The kitchens were 12x27m and 9x9m in size, both equipped with running water, waste supply and air conditioning. The team completed the whole installation of all the structures within just five days, using only forklifts and jibs.

Last weekend saw London welcome back the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (Formula E) at the Excel Exhibition Centre in East London’s historic docklands. The London E-Prix was last held at Battersea Park in 2016.

Cube, appointed by Formula E due to its unique Continest temporary building solution, delivered and installed race infrastructure for the event during the 10 days leading up to the event. The Continest solution used, ideal for event organisers looking to meet sustainability targets, brings temporary facilities and accommodation solutions to events in an easy to set up and environmentally conscious way. Utilising innovative foldable container technology, multiple units can be transported on a single truck, enabling significant reductions in road haulage costs and carbon emissions. The units, fully modular in nature, can also be joined together to form multiple configurations, including multi-storey buildings.

For London E-Prix, the first international race series to race on an indoor/outdoor circuit, Cube built a specially designed two storey race control building, situated overlooking the start/finish line to ensure all stewards/marshals have a clear view of the race’s start & finish. In total, Cube supplied more than 100 units across all areas of the venue, to include race control, medical centres, a PCR test centre and lab, accreditation units and media and TV compounds. Access challenges to certain areas were overcome by the foldable nature of the Continest container units.

Debuting at the event were Cube Modular’s accreditation/ticket units, with perspex windows for staff safety and roller shutters for added lock up security. For the media and TV compounds Cube also installed a full air con solution and acoustic linings.

Jon Graham, Cube Management’s Commercial Director said, “We’re delighted to work with Formula E on a live project, having been in discussion with them for a couple of years. It is one of the most complex projects Cube has undertaken to date, given the mix of external and internal locations and the challenge with operating plant in confined spaces, but through Cube’s experience and talented project management team and crew, the installation of this multiple site, 130 unit project, was executed without any significant challenges. Delivering the project so successfully wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of the team at Formula E”.

Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s Managing Director said: “We’re thrilled to have brought our unique containers to the E-Prix in London. Another perfect showcase to demonstrate just how flexible, versatile and sustainable the Continest solution is. The sports industry is taking sustainability increasingly seriously, so it’s not surprising that our unique foldable buildings are in great demand.”

Andy Moss, Chairman Cube International commented, “It is fabulous to see our Continest solution being utilised in the manner for which it was designed, making a complex requirement considerably easier and, most importantly, delivering real and tangible reductions in carbon emissions. As part of our drive to make global sporting properties more sustainable, Cube will be permanently locating significant stocks of the Continest units around the world, enabling us to provide localised solutions to World Series and major events. Formula E requires real recognition for having the foresight to embrace such technology and for taking direct action to reduce their emissions impact.”
