Earth Day 2023: ‘Invest In Our Planet’

On April 22nd, stakeholders of all backgrounds come together to advance sustainability and climate action in commemoration of Earth Day. First held in 1970, the annual event now includes a wide range of events and initiatives coordinated globally. This year, the Earth Day movement is rallying behind the theme ‘Invest In Our Planet’, which highlights the importance of dedicating our time, resources, and energy to solving climate change and other environmental issues, with a view that investing in our planet is necessary to protect it and the best way to pave a path towards a prosperous future.

Cube is equally committed to protecting the environment, as well as the health and safety of our employees and the global communities in which we operate. Our business takes the necessary measures to carry out its statutory, moral, and social duties to the highest standards, compliant with the current industry best practise.

Cube is constantly improving the environmental impact of its operations and follow these key principles:

  • Actively measuring and monitoring environmental impacts
  • Reducing waste, maximising the reuse, and recycling of materials and managing disposal responsibly
  • Ensuring our use of natural resources (energy, water, products we buy) is sustainable
  • Protecting the environment by seeking to avoid and reduce the pollution of air, water and land that may result as a consequence of our business operations
  • Ensuring that our activities are sensitive to the local community and that we leave areas exactly as they were found or better
  • Developing awareness of environmental context and initiatives to encourage proactive stakeholder engagement
  • Providing suitable environmental training for our staff and continuously promoting sustainability and environmental awareness.

Continest

Cube’s exclusive Continest build system uses foldable technology to reduce transport and logistical costs:

  • Ten buildings can be transported, folded and stacked on a single truck
  • Traditional fixed framed buildings would require five times the number of lorries
  • Continest foldable portable buildings achieve an 80% reduction in transport carbon footprint by reducing the number of trucks required, thereby also reducing our Scope 1 emissions
  • Reduced diesel exhaust fumes reduce carbon, C02, emissions and particulate soot –improving health and wellbeing in the event space and locations the units are installed.

Given the nature of Cube Modular’s business and our ISO20121 Sustainable Event Management Certification, we include:

  • Carbon emission reports for all our event clients and for internal reporting
  • These reports detail the quantity of CO2 emissions produced in transport, and the amount saved compared to transporting fixed framed cabins.

Our business measures its environmental health, safety and sustainability performance against established standards and this performance is reviewed by the Board of Directors and Safety & Sustainability team on a regular basis.

By making sustainability an integral part of our strategy and operations, we aim to achieve long-term returns and generate a positive impact for society and the environment, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the Paris Agreement. We make sustainability an intrinsic part of all our global business relationships and work closely with our suppliers and business partners to achieve long lasting impacts across our entire value chain.

Cube’s NOEA Judges’ Award Rounds-Off A Multi Award-Winning Year

Cube Modular has won a total of five industry awards in 2022, the most recent coming from National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA) last month. NOEA presented Cube Modular with the coveted ‘Judges’ Award’, recognising the importance of innovation in the industry going forward. A delighted James Lauchlan, Cube Modular’s Sales Manager, received the trophy at the NOEA awards dinner.

The NOEA award follows four others for Cube Modular, all recognising the creativity of our company in reimagining infrastructure for the events industry and assisting organisers in their goals to reduce event carbon footprint.

Green Guardians Award: IQ Magazine Class of 2022 Sustainable Suppliers and Innovators

Hire Industry Product of the Year Award: Hire Association Europe Hire Awards of Excellence

The company has exclusive UK and Ireland, as well as global sporting events, distributor rights for Continest unique foldable cabins, the most sustainable temporary portable accommodation solution available to the event and hire industries worldwide. Folded flat and stacked for transport and erected on site in just a few minutes, these innovative units provide robust and flexible temporary infrastructure for any venue, enabling events to reduce their CO2 and GHG emissions by up to 80%, compared to using traditional fixed framed cabins.

Reducing carbon footprint is a key priority for festivals, sporting and other major events, so the demand for more sustainable products from suppliers is on the increase. Travel and transport specifically has consistently been found to make up at least 80% of a typical event’s carbon footprint, with transportation of building infrastructure contributing significantly due to the size of the structures.

Cube Modular’s Managing Director Brandon Weston said “Receiving the prestigious ‘Judges’ Award’ from NOEA was the perfect way to round off a very successful year which has seen Cube become established as a key infrastructure supplier to the festivals and events industry. We’ve also consolidated our relationships with well-established sporting brands.”

Cube International (Cube) is excited to launch Cube Sight & Sound – a new event, stadium and venue retail solution, incorporating a large format video screen situated above a retail, merchandise or F&B portable building. The unit is being showcased by Cube at The Showman’s Show today.

Bringing promotional, activation and revenue-making opportunities to stadia and events, each unit incorporates a 6m screen mounted on top of one of Cube Modular’s fully brandable point of sale units. Opportunities for event and venue organisers include brand activation, product visualisation, information sharing, live action broadcast, gamification, or a combination of the above.

Cube’s new product offering is a prime example of how the Cube group of companies is forward thinking, unique in its approach and looking to re-imagine and re-invent stadia and events, by delivering innovative solutions which can increase revenue streams and maximise brand activation at venues.

The units fit particularly well within Cube Management’s event services portfolio. Jon Graham, Cube Management’s MD, said, “The potential applications for these new Cube Sight & Sound retail units are endless. We are really looking forward to working with our partners and clients to create an impact, add value and maximise brand activation and sponsorship possibilities across their stadia and venues.”

The screen cassette frame’s size matches the length of Cube Modular’s award-winning range of foldable Continest merchandising and retail units perfectly, allowing the biggest screen width possible above the units and enabling eco-friendly transport of multiple, stacked units to take place. Up to 10 of the multi-purpose base units can be transported flat-packed and stacked on a single truck, leading to an 80% reduction in carbon emissions compared to transporting the equivalent number of traditional fixed framed units.

The compact, neat and sustainable solution offers a rapidly installed pop-up retail opportunity with immediate activation, ideal for monetising event and festival brands, and will equally enhance stadium and sport fanzones.

Key applications for these versatile units include:

  • Public events, including sports, festivals, concerts and other live events
  • Retail environments and pop-up shops
  • Spectator villages and fan zones
  • Roadside and city centre public spaces
  • Showrooms, marketing suites and product launches
  • Corporate premises
  • Gamification

The concept was recently proven during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where a Cube Sight & Sound unit was installed at Brindley Place to welcome residents and sports fans into its central square location to enjoy watching the action, live in a community atmosphere.

Fitting neatly into the corner of the square with its small 6m x 2.4m footprint, a food and beverage unit was used to serve refreshments whilst fans watched the competition on the 6m x 3m screen above. The combination of pop-up café and cinema screen proved a winning formula throughout the Games fortnight and its popularity outstripped all expectations. The same unit was also used to screen the Women’s Euros final to a packed audience, during which food and drink sold out very quickly.

The Cube Sight & Sound installation can be viewed at Cube Modular’s Stand 138 on Avenue B, at The Showman’s Show, Newbury Showground on 19 and 20 October 2022. Alternatively, please contact the Cube team for more information.

Ready to make an impact! Cube fully prepared for the Rugby League World Cup

With less than a week to go, our team is getting fully prepared and ready for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021). Following a year’s postponement due to Covid, the RLWC2021 will be the first ever World Cup to combine the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments, with 61 matches in over 36 match days held across 21 different stadia in the UK.

As RLWC2021’s Official Retail Partner, the Cube team has built its product proposition around the tournaments’ official branded suppliers including replica jerseys from the thirty-two competing nations, complemented by additional ranges of Cube-designed own-label collections. The official merchandise collections have been available on the Cube-operated official RLWC2021 online store since September 2020.

The onsite retail programme will be managed by the Cube Management team in terms of retail structures and retail operation, utilising our very own retail and merchandise units. A total of nine Continest units, with full counter fit, roller shutters, full internal shop fit outs and branding, will be utilised and moved around across the venues, as well as 5 wooden booth internal structures. Cube will also be re-branding existing stadium and venue shops from which official merchandise will be displayed and available for sale. For maximum installation and operations efficiency, Cube Management will be basing its on-event logistics team in Oldham for the next two months where units will be built, stored and transported to and from each of the venues.

The Cube retail team, including 5 managers and 170 sales assistants, will be managing three retail teams across the venues and duration of the tournaments to effectively retail and fully operate the RLWC2021 Official Merchandise at the Official Stores at all stadia and venues.

Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s MD, said: “It’s great to see our sustainable retail units being utilised at this major, global and celebrated event. It’s another fabulous demonstration of just how versatile Cube Modular’s range of units are, and how they are able to be transported from venue to venue in a short space of time. A true showcase of their incredibly flexible nature!”

Andy Smith, Cube’s Retail Director, said: “We’re thrilled to be involved in the RLWC2021, the pinnacle event of rugby league. We’re all set and can’t wait to get our team on the ground. The onsite retail programme may be complex, because it includes the three tournaments in one combined schedule with 58 stores at 21 venues and over 170 staff, but we’re really looking forward to being part of its legacy and making it the ‘biggest and best’ Rugby League World Cup ever.”

Harry Lonsdale, Cube Management’s Project Manager, added: “A lot of preparation has, and is, going into the planning of this world-renowned event. With the busy logistical nature of the tournaments over the different venues, Cube Management is looking forward to showcasing the different retail outlets and merchandise propositions it can offer, both internally and externally, and its recognised operational expertise.”

Cube International officially opens new HQ in Worcester

Worcester, 25th March 2022: Cube International officially opened its new 45,000 sqft facility in Worcester today, in response to the group’s national and international business growth.

The facility was opened jointly by the Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Stephen Hodgson, Perry the Bull, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games mascot, and Cube International’s CEO, Ed Boardman, supported by a host of local, national and international business representatives celebrating this major step forward for the Cube group.

The new facility will bring together several areas of the business, providing for a far better integrated and co-ordinated solution for clients and partners, and offering a more efficient model of working. The warehouse embraces new technology to enhance Cube’s already solid sustainability credentials and will play a key role in providing a cleaner, greener and healthier way to work.

Unlike many of its contemporary companies in the sport events industry, Cube has been able to respond quickly and decisively during the Covid crisis, replacing typical event work with consultation, planning and the installing of Covid test centres, laboratories, and its innovative hand sanitiser walls.

Covid was, and remains, a huge challenge, but as a business Cube had the foresight to adapt and used its agility and speed of response, both necessary components, to succeed in the world of sport and events.

Ed Boardman, Cube International’s CEO, said: “The opening of our new HQ in Worcester is an important development in the growth of the Cube International business and an important step in delivering our ambitious growth plans. Our new facility will also allow us to enhance our efficiency and sustainability within the sports industry and enable us to integrate our group more effectively. It is a big step forward as we grow our national and international footprint to best serve our clients and partners.”

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Stephen Hodgson, said: “It was a real pleasure to be part of the opening of Cube’s Head Quarters today. It was great to come to their new facility in Worcester and see what they do. I wish them the greatest success for the years to come.”

The Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham this year, has been a major catalyst in the decision to move to Worcester, where the warehouse element will be used to manage the on-event retail programme for the Games, providing stock management and logistics. As a business Cube has recently trebled its head count and will, during the Games, employ more than 50 Megastore employees from June to the end of the Games, as well as 1,000 event retail staff across all the Games venues and villages.

David Leather, CGF Partnership’s CEO said: “Seeing the impact of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games through the attraction of new business to the region, local business growth and enhanced jobs and skills opportunities in the West Midlands, truly demonstrates the legacy hosting the Commonwealth Games can have on a region. With less than 150 days to go until the Games, it is wonderful to see Cube, our Official Master Licensee, bring even greater benefits to the region for Games time and beyond.”

Cube, living evidence of Birmingham 2022’s commitment to using local businesses and resource, will leave behind a real legacy of employment and further development. Cube also recognises the value of the region’s major education institutes and has developed strong relationships with the local region’s universities and colleges, offering work placements, internships, and apprenticeship programmes.
