Cube and ecolibrium unite to help tackle CO2 travel emissions for live events

Cube Modular is delighted to announce ecolibrium as its new charity partner. ecolibrium will help the sustainability-pioneering portable building accommodation solutions company to tackle its annual carbon emissions from travel, finding ways to reduce impacts where possible, and make climate investments to address unavoidable emissions.

Cube shares ecolibrium’s mission in finding solutions to help the live events industry reduce carbon emissions from travel and transport – typically the biggest contributor to an event’s overall carbon footprint. Through its modular, multifunctional portable buildings, which include Continest containers, Cube offers the most mobile and sustainable temporary portable building solution in the modular accommodation industry. Thanks to the containers’ patented design, ten units can be transported on a single truck, offering huge savings on road haulage costs and similar reductions in carbon emissions. The units are also uniquely developed for quick and easy set up; a foldable solution offering an 80% cut in logistical and storage costs, and impressive reductions in CO2 and GHG emissions.

Both Cube Modular and ecolibrium will be at the Event Buyers Live conference (EBL), 29th Nov – 1st Dec, where ecolibrium will host a panel on tackling the environmental impacts of travel and transport at live events, bringing together environmental consultant, Liz Warwick (Lansdowne Warwick), Graham McVoy (Site & Ops Manager, Boomtown Fair), Brandon Weston (MD, Cube Modular) and Naomi Lawson (Project Manager, ecolibrium) to discuss the challenge and look at strategies for reducing travel carbon emissions at events, with a focus on innovation in the supply chain and how stakeholders across the sector can collaborate to create positive change. At EBL Cube Modular are set to launch a new range of foldable buildings to further help events cut travel carbon emissions from the supply chain.

Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s MD, said:

“We are thrilled to be working in partnership with ecolibrium to tackle travel emissions. Our innovative foldable Continest buildings are designed to reduce carbon footprint through massive transport efficiencies. With the help of ecolibrium’s guidance, we look forward to achieving our sustainability goals in every aspect of our business, as well as supporting their existing climate investment projects.”

ecolibrium’s Communication Manager, Bethan Riach, added:

“We are delighted to have found a partner who shares our mission to help the live events industry address environmental impacts of travel. Cube Modular has a proven track record of solutions that allow events to cut carbon emissions from the supply chain through their innovative range of products and services.”

ecolibrium was founded in 2015 as a live events industry response to the climate crisis – a community of events, festivals, suppliers, artists and music companies taking action to tackle the impacts of travel. ecolibrium provides resources, tools, advice and inspiration to reduce travel emissions and invest in climate solutions – supporting ecosystem protection, regeneration and clean energy generation. Since 2015, ecolibrium has helped to fund eight renewable energy projects, planted over 33,000 trees, and protected over 12,000 acres of threatened rainforest.

Last weekend saw London welcome back the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (Formula E) at the Excel Exhibition Centre in East London’s historic docklands. The London E-Prix was last held at Battersea Park in 2016.

Cube, appointed by Formula E due to its unique Continest temporary building solution, delivered and installed race infrastructure for the event during the 10 days leading up to the event. The Continest solution used, ideal for event organisers looking to meet sustainability targets, brings temporary facilities and accommodation solutions to events in an easy to set up and environmentally conscious way. Utilising innovative foldable container technology, multiple units can be transported on a single truck, enabling significant reductions in road haulage costs and carbon emissions. The units, fully modular in nature, can also be joined together to form multiple configurations, including multi-storey buildings.

For London E-Prix, the first international race series to race on an indoor/outdoor circuit, Cube built a specially designed two storey race control building, situated overlooking the start/finish line to ensure all stewards/marshals have a clear view of the race’s start & finish. In total, Cube supplied more than 100 units across all areas of the venue, to include race control, medical centres, a PCR test centre and lab, accreditation units and media and TV compounds. Access challenges to certain areas were overcome by the foldable nature of the Continest container units.

Debuting at the event were Cube Modular’s accreditation/ticket units, with perspex windows for staff safety and roller shutters for added lock up security. For the media and TV compounds Cube also installed a full air con solution and acoustic linings.

Jon Graham, Cube Management’s Commercial Director said, “We’re delighted to work with Formula E on a live project, having been in discussion with them for a couple of years. It is one of the most complex projects Cube has undertaken to date, given the mix of external and internal locations and the challenge with operating plant in confined spaces, but through Cube’s experience and talented project management team and crew, the installation of this multiple site, 130 unit project, was executed without any significant challenges. Delivering the project so successfully wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of the team at Formula E”.

Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s Managing Director said: “We’re thrilled to have brought our unique containers to the E-Prix in London. Another perfect showcase to demonstrate just how flexible, versatile and sustainable the Continest solution is. The sports industry is taking sustainability increasingly seriously, so it’s not surprising that our unique foldable buildings are in great demand.”

Andy Moss, Chairman Cube International commented, “It is fabulous to see our Continest solution being utilised in the manner for which it was designed, making a complex requirement considerably easier and, most importantly, delivering real and tangible reductions in carbon emissions. As part of our drive to make global sporting properties more sustainable, Cube will be permanently locating significant stocks of the Continest units around the world, enabling us to provide localised solutions to World Series and major events. Formula E requires real recognition for having the foresight to embrace such technology and for taking direct action to reduce their emissions impact.”

Cube Modular, part of the Cube International group, will be showcasing its award-winning sustainable Continest foldable building solution at The Event Production Show in May this year.

Cube’s Continest foldable portable buildings are the world’s most eco-friendly foldable temporary buildings and offer robust and scalable temporary accommodation solutions for any event or venue.

Offering big savings on transport costs and carbon emissions, event organisers can achieve their sustainability goals by renting Continest units for any temporary building need, including as box offices, ticket collection units, bars, catering units, pop up shops, retail units and security or police bases.

Innovative foldable technology allows the units to be folded down and stacked for transport, thus enabling a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to fixed portable building systems. Available in two sizes, transport allows ten CN20s (10x20ft) or twenty CN10s (20x10ft) to be transported on a single truck.

NATO awards Continest official supplier status for its CN10 and CN20 foldable containers

Cube Modular, as the UK and Ireland’s sole distributor of Continest’s foldable containers, is delighted to announce that the Continest CN10 and CN20 foldable containers have received the NSN (NATO Stock Number) code.

Brandon Weston, MD of Cube Modular, said “The NATO Codification System is the biggest and most comprehensive in the world, used by over 60 countries. In the UK it is used for all procurement by the army, navy and air force and ensures form, fit and function are met through the supply chain. We are very proud to be Continest’s exclusive partner for the supply of their unique, ground-breaking and award-winning portable building products.”

The NSN is a 13-digit numerical code which identifies all the ‘standardised material items of supply’ as they have been recognised by all NATO countries. The codification system is used by the forces of all the NATO countries (army, navy and air force), as well as those of non-NATO countries that participate in the NATO Codification System (NCS). In fact, there are more non-NATO countries using the NCS than there are NATO countries. All products are procured through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.
