Earth Day 2023: ‘Invest In Our Planet’

On April 22nd, stakeholders of all backgrounds come together to advance sustainability and climate action in commemoration of Earth Day. First held in 1970, the annual event now includes a wide range of events and initiatives coordinated globally. This year, the Earth Day movement is rallying behind the theme ‘Invest In Our Planet’, which highlights the importance of dedicating our time, resources, and energy to solving climate change and other environmental issues, with a view that investing in our planet is necessary to protect it and the best way to pave a path towards a prosperous future.

Cube is equally committed to protecting the environment, as well as the health and safety of our employees and the global communities in which we operate. Our business takes the necessary measures to carry out its statutory, moral, and social duties to the highest standards, compliant with the current industry best practise.

Cube is constantly improving the environmental impact of its operations and follow these key principles:

  • Actively measuring and monitoring environmental impacts
  • Reducing waste, maximising the reuse, and recycling of materials and managing disposal responsibly
  • Ensuring our use of natural resources (energy, water, products we buy) is sustainable
  • Protecting the environment by seeking to avoid and reduce the pollution of air, water and land that may result as a consequence of our business operations
  • Ensuring that our activities are sensitive to the local community and that we leave areas exactly as they were found or better
  • Developing awareness of environmental context and initiatives to encourage proactive stakeholder engagement
  • Providing suitable environmental training for our staff and continuously promoting sustainability and environmental awareness.

Cube’s exclusive Continest build system uses foldable technology to reduce transport and logistical costs:

  • Ten buildings can be transported, folded and stacked on a single truck
  • Traditional fixed framed buildings would require five times the number of lorries
  • Continest foldable portable buildings achieve an 80% reduction in transport carbon footprint by reducing the number of trucks required, thereby also reducing our Scope 1 emissions
  • Reduced diesel exhaust fumes reduce carbon, C02, emissions and particulate soot –improving health and wellbeing in the event space and locations the units are installed.

Given the nature of Cube Modular’s business and our ISO20121 Sustainable Event Management Certification, we include:

  • Carbon emission reports for all our event clients and for internal reporting
  • These reports detail the quantity of CO2 emissions produced in transport, and the amount saved compared to transporting fixed framed cabins.

Our business measures its environmental health, safety and sustainability performance against established standards and this performance is reviewed by the Board of Directors and Safety & Sustainability team on a regular basis.

By making sustainability an integral part of our strategy and operations, we aim to achieve long-term returns and generate a positive impact for society and the environment, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the Paris Agreement. We make sustainability an intrinsic part of all our global business relationships and work closely with our suppliers and business partners to achieve long lasting impacts across our entire value chain.

Cube Modular to Showcase New Sustainable Event Hotel at The Event Production Show 2022

Cube Modular, part of the Cube International group, will be demonstrating its new Event Hotel and Snoozy Glamping Pods at The Event Production Show 2022.

The Event Hotel is a brand new concept for the 2022 festival season and constructed using the company’s award-winning eco-friendly Continest foldable buildings and wetcell technology. It can accommodate up to 40 people in 20 bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom; a complete eco-friendly accommodation solution. The entire on-event hotel structure, consisting of twenty CN10 units and ten innovative wetcell dual ensuite bathroom units, is transported on just two trucks, leading to a massive reduction in carbon footprint.

Alongside its unique Event Hotel, Cube is now also offering Snoozy Glamping Pods for event rental. These stylish, lockable cube-shaped units offer secure, luxury sleeping accommodation for festival-goers. The aluminium and steel frame and aircell patented structure folds for storage and transport and features raised flooring, lighting and USB power.

The Event Hotel is the latest addition to Cube’s Continest range of foldable buildings, the most environmentally-friendly event solution which provides robust and scalable buildings for box office, dressing room, staff office, retail, catering and other temporary building needs.

“We are now a one stop temporary accommodation provider for festival and event organisers due to our expanding range of unique building solutions”, said Brandon Weston, MD of Cube Modular. “We offer a complete sustainable event infrastructure, including pop up shops, bar and catering units and offices, as well as our new sleeping units, which are in great demand following a successful inaugural season last year.”

Event organisers renting Continest units for their temporary accommodation building needs can make big savings on transport costs, reduce carbon emissions, and achieve their sustainability goals. Through innovative foldable technology, the units are designed to be folded down and stacked for transport and storage. Ten CN20s (10x20ft) or twenty CN10s (20x10ft) can be transported on a single truck, thus enabling a reduction of CO2 emissions by 80% compared to fixed portable building systems.

Cube Modular is the UK and Ireland’s exclusive distributor of Continest and can be visited at Stand TS01 at The Event Production Show on 8-9 March, ExCel London Exhibition Centre.

Cube During Covid-19

Cube During Covid-19

Cube During Covid-19

Thinking outside the box during a global pandemic

Since the beginning of 2020, with the global sports industry and much of the world at a standstill at various times due to the pandemic, the innovations team at Cube has been working hard to provide support and solutions for businesses and events in the wake of WHO and UK Government Covid-19 guidelines.

Cube launched its ‘Don’t Pass It On’ hand sanitiser stations in March 2020, the first of its kind in the world; a simple concept to encourage hand sanitation for spectators, visitors and staff at public venues in order to help mitigate the spread of the virus. Tried and tested in the vigorous environment of sports events, the units made their first appearance at the Six Nations and at  Cheltenham Racecourse. Following the ban on sports events they have since been deployed at venues and businesses across Europe, including the NHS frontline, airports, hospitals, supermarkets, football clubs, schools and nursing homes.

Utilising Cube’s modular foldable containers, the Cube team have developed several other important products to support the war on Covid, including the design of Care Home Visitor Pods, a covid-secure portable building which ensures safe visitations for relatives and residents. In addition, Cube’s innovative portable buildings were deployed at major venues across the UK as Covid-19 swab collection stations and hi-tech clinical testing laboratories.

Working with expert partners from across the events industry, Cube is also actively involved in The Safe Event Scheme, a standardised process for ensuring events are planned, delivered and managed safely and responsibly. The scheme is set to become a benchmark for the sports and events industries.

I would like to pass on my sincere appreciation for all your hard work in helping Sainsbury’s to feed the nation during this extraordinary time. I thank you for your commitment, your professionalism and above all your continued support.”
Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Director of Property, Procurement and Cost Transformation

I would like to say how impressed we were with the Heathrow (Covid-19 screening test facility) installation. Nick Markham and I took the senior Heathrow team around the site today as part of an operational readiness review and they were very impressed with the professionalism of the build.

Once it’s all over, we’ll do amazing things again

When the global crisis is over, our industry will have faced some very tough and challenging times. It will, no doubt, also have been given the opportunity to be refreshed, invigorated and re-energised. No one is quite sure what the future holds, but the Cube group is ready to provide you with the services, products and support you need. As a collective team, we will bring fresh concepts, forward-thinking solutions and exciting new ideas to your brand and business.
Together, we will achieve amazing things again.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing right now! (edited March 2022)

Cube Launches Sustainable Event Hotel at Event Buyers Live

We’re delighted to have launched our sustainable event hotel at the Event Buyers Live conference in Nottingham recently, which was received with rave reviews!

Our new state-of-the-art and sustainable event hotel, available for 2022 events and festivals, is constructed using Cube’s market-leading and award-winning Continest foldable containers, buildings which can be rapidly deployed to create multi-room accommodation structures.

Showcasing our innovative design at the conference with a two ensuite bedroom structure, the insulated buildings can be jointed and stacked to form a two-storey 20-bedroom hotel, with air conditioning available where required. Full service and furnishing contracts are also available. Our eco-friendly modular hotel is suitable for any large scale event, making it ideal for organisers looking for on-site staff accommodation to reduce their travel and transport costs.

The Event Buyers Live conference, where prospective clients pre-book meetings with suppliers whose products they are interested in, saw a fully booked Cube team showcase its modular portable hotel to many curious parties. In fact, due to demand, the team was unable to fit everyone into the conference timeframe, meaning more showings and demonstrations have been booked in the weeks ahead.

Festival and event organisers who did manage to book an appointment to see the team were particularly interested in discussing their sustainability goals for 2022 and finding out how Cube can help to reduce their travel and transport emissions through the use of its foldable containers. Continest’s innovative foldable container technology means just two trucks can deliver an entire 20-bedroom ensuite pop-up hotel to any location, leading to an 80% saving in carbon fuel emissions compared to fixed framed portable buildings.  In addition, an entire event infrastructure consisting of ticket offices, security units, admin offices, merchandise units, bar and catering units as well as accreditations offices, can also be delivered on just two trucks*.

Cube Modular’s charity partner, ecolibrium, also hosted a panel of experts discussing the challenges and looking at strategies for reducing travel carbon emissions at events, focusing on innovation in the supply chain and how stakeholders across the sector can collaborate to create positive change. Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s Managing Director, was part of this thought-provoking panel, alongside Naomi Lawson (project manager, ecolibrium) and other eminent players in the environmental and events industries.

Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s MD, said: “We had a very successful time at Event Buyers Live and received some fantastic feedback on the launch of our new event hotel, which will be available for 2022. This event has been a fantastic networking opportunity for developing both new and existing relationships and we very much look forward to working with them all in what is sure to be an exciting year for the event and festival industry.”

Last weekend saw London welcome back the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (Formula E) at the Excel Exhibition Centre in East London’s historic docklands. The London E-Prix was last held at Battersea Park in 2016.

Cube, appointed by Formula E due to its unique Continest temporary building solution, delivered and installed race infrastructure for the event during the 10 days leading up to the event. The Continest solution used, ideal for event organisers looking to meet sustainability targets, brings temporary facilities and accommodation solutions to events in an easy to set up and environmentally conscious way. Utilising innovative foldable container technology, multiple units can be transported on a single truck, enabling significant reductions in road haulage costs and carbon emissions. The units, fully modular in nature, can also be joined together to form multiple configurations, including multi-storey buildings.

For London E-Prix, the first international race series to race on an indoor/outdoor circuit, Cube built a specially designed two storey race control building, situated overlooking the start/finish line to ensure all stewards/marshals have a clear view of the race’s start & finish. In total, Cube supplied more than 100 units across all areas of the venue, to include race control, medical centres, a PCR test centre and lab, accreditation units and media and TV compounds. Access challenges to certain areas were overcome by the foldable nature of the Continest container units.

Debuting at the event were Cube Modular’s accreditation/ticket units, with perspex windows for staff safety and roller shutters for added lock up security. For the media and TV compounds Cube also installed a full air con solution and acoustic linings.

Jon Graham, Cube Management’s Commercial Director said, “We’re delighted to work with Formula E on a live project, having been in discussion with them for a couple of years. It is one of the most complex projects Cube has undertaken to date, given the mix of external and internal locations and the challenge with operating plant in confined spaces, but through Cube’s experience and talented project management team and crew, the installation of this multiple site, 130 unit project, was executed without any significant challenges. Delivering the project so successfully wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of the team at Formula E”.

Brandon Weston, Cube Modular’s Managing Director said: “We’re thrilled to have brought our unique containers to the E-Prix in London. Another perfect showcase to demonstrate just how flexible, versatile and sustainable the Continest solution is. The sports industry is taking sustainability increasingly seriously, so it’s not surprising that our unique foldable buildings are in great demand.”

Andy Moss, Chairman Cube International commented, “It is fabulous to see our Continest solution being utilised in the manner for which it was designed, making a complex requirement considerably easier and, most importantly, delivering real and tangible reductions in carbon emissions. As part of our drive to make global sporting properties more sustainable, Cube will be permanently locating significant stocks of the Continest units around the world, enabling us to provide localised solutions to World Series and major events. Formula E requires real recognition for having the foresight to embrace such technology and for taking direct action to reduce their emissions impact.”
